As the proud winner of the 2019 World Luxury Spa & Restaurant awards for Best Mexican Restaurant – Continent Winner: Africa and Best Luxury Interior Design – Regional Winner: East Africa Mercado brings a rich and modern restaurant twist to the city of Nairobi.

The restaurant has a dynamic vibe, with lively background music. A beautiful sign that lights up at night welcomes you and If you were impressed by the sign as I was, wait until you step inside. The restaurant has a golden theme for its décor and a well lit spacious interior.

The Instagram worthy décor plays an integral part in the vibrant ambience. A perfect mix of eclectic pieces, such as old-fashioned cars, ceiling lights in glass bottles and seats made from swinging benches. The seats are all a mixture of the theme colours and are arranged around tables that can sit around four people or more

Additionally, from a covered balcony area, you can enjoy the scenic street scenes as you indulge in the sumptuous meals.

The Menu

The menu is an extensive variety of authentic Mexican dishes. If you are in a group, ordering several meals to share is a good way to sample different dishes which is served in Mexican style plates staying true to the restaurant’s theme. The food is impressive and very filling. Everything comes in a double portion at a very pocket-friendly price

Main Course

Some of the starters include tapas (Ksh. 900/-), chicken wings and guacamole molcajete with homemade tortilla chips (Ksh.750/-.) Or you can warm up with a soup like the tomato-based Tia Maria, Wild Mushroom soup or a Pumpkin Shrimp and Black Bean for Ksh.750/-.

From the main courses, the rib-eye steak in tequila-flavoured sauce, chicken roulade, shrimp taco, calamari tostadas and the crispy battered snapper fish is favoured by many. Prices range from Ksh.1400- 2700/-.

Nonetheless, the vegetarians and vegans will not be disappointed, as there are many non-meat options. There is even a Jain menu with multiple dishes. As per Mexican standard, the wonderful-tasting sauces were all spicy varying from mild to fire-hot which you will enjoy if you are a fan of chilli and also gives the food added flavour

Desserts

Dessert includes Mexican delights drenched in milk like the Tres Leche cake, tequila-flavoured chocolate cake, a sugar-free soya dessert or deep-fried churro pastries. For something more refreshing, there are fruit sorbets of mango or strawberry.

Having also won the best Cocktail Menu – Continent Winner: Africa in 2019 their wine list is decent and the list of Mexican drinks is impressive, with cocktails such as Mango Chamoy margaritas, rum-based fruit Daiquiris and non-alcoholic mocktails which range between Ksh.700-950/-.

Additionally, they also have lovely fresh fruit juices, such as cucumber watermelon Fresca and pineapple mint juice which go for Ksh.450/-.

Altogether, the meals are very fresh and flavourful and presented with fast and friendly service.
