Many cities have been offering dinner in the dark for quite some time. Now, one hotel in Nairobi is going a step further by employing a group of vision challenged servers to serve meals.
Guests can enjoy a meal without their sense of sight when dining in the dark, which gives a unique sensory experience. Customers are led to their seats in a dimly lit setting and advised to rely on their other senses in order to fully experience the flavors, textures, and scents of the dish. The impression of flavor is enhanced by the lack of visual signals, making each bite a revelation.
A true idea that intends to challenge and engage the senses while cultivating a better appreciation for the culinary arts, dining in the dark may seem outlandish at first.
According to The Bulkheadseat, The waiters are trained by blind specialists from London and the franchise owner, Abdul Kamara, says that “the experience changes the perception and gives more prominence to the saying: Disability is not inability. The joke I often make with people is ‘Dining in the Dark’ is just like every day at home for me.” Kamara lost his sight in 2008.

This experience has been introduced by the Tribe Hotel in Gigiri, Nairobi, but not just the visitors can avoid seeing the food. Everyone on staff is blind. When customers enter the restaurant, a blind server forms a conga line and leads them to their tables in the dining area. Then, like they would during a typical dinner, servers come back to provide food and drinks. The three courses of food are presented in total darkness.
