On Saturday, the Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo will begin operating flights between Nairobi and Mumbai for a starting price of $186 (Sh26,523) for an economy-class ticket. The low prices show that the Indian airline wants to draw customers to the new route before raising ticket prices. Competitors Ethiopian Airlines and Emirates are charging substantially higher prices.
The airline has set a one-way fare of $179 (Sh25,525) on the Mumbai-Nairobi route, also in economy. Flights departing from Nairobi will cost $359 (Sh51,193) for a roundtrip ticket. Flights back from Mumbai will cost $365 (Sh52,049) each way. The introductory rates offered by the Indian airline are less than half of what its competitors are now charging.
