Steam Treatment/ Facial Steaming at Home

PART 2

This versatile skin treatment can be simple and free or as luxe and costly as you — and your wallet — choose. Our Aesthetician IVY MULUKA rolls out simple techniques to try for a quick steaming exercise at home.

Steaming your face at home

The beauty of steaming is there are plenty of ways to do it, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. You can purchase a facial steamer specifically designed for skin care purposes, but this is optional. While using a steamer is the easiest and more powerful than other DIY methods, you can still enjoy the benefits of face steaming at home.

Steam can cause serious burns, so it’s very important to keep your face a safe distance away from the source of the steam. Steaming should feel good. If it feels too hot or irritating, stop.

Steaming techniques to try

Hot towel technique

For this old-fashioned method of face steaming:

Put a clean, small towel in a bowl.

Pour hot — not boiling — water over the towel.

Wring out the towel and lay it over your face.

Use caution if you’re heating the water with a teapot or microwave. If the towel is too hot to hold in your hands, it’s too hot for your face. Let it cool for a few minutes.

Steam with a bowl

You can also do spa-like steam with a bowl and dry towel. Pour some clean, hot water in a large bowl and drape a towel over the back of your head. The towel will trap the steam in as you lean over the bowl and enjoy a mini sauna-like experience.

Immediately after

Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry. Your skin will be extra sensitive, so you don’t want to irritate it by rubbing with a towel.

Apply a moisturizing cream or serum. The effects of your moisturizer or serum will be enhanced after a steam, so use something that nourishes. If you’re after younger-looking skin, this is a great time to use an anti-aging cream.

Massage your face. What better way to end a relaxing face steam than with a gentle face massage? Use your fingers to gently massage your forehead, cheeks, and neck using upward strokes. Unless you have oily or sensitive skin, you can use a bit of facial oil to enhance your massage.
