Farmers will now have a higher prices as a result of the National Cereals and Produce Board’s announcement that it will purchase 90kg bags of maize for Sh5,600.

The price for a 90kg bag of corn has gone up from the previous Sh5,100.

This was made clear on Thursday when the management of the NCPB testified before the National Assembly’s Public Investment, Social Services Management, and Agriculture Committee.

Director General of the NCPB Joseph Kimeto claimed that after a public uproar, the prices have been increased, providing producers with a significant reprieve.

“Right now, we are open, and farmers can transact with us. The price was Sh5100 for a 90kg bag, but we have reviewed it to Sh5600,” he stated. Adding, “Any farmer who can deliver on that price we pay it in cash through M-Pesa transaction so there’s no delay at all,” Kimeto said.

After the government declared it had lifted the prohibition on the importation of duty-free maize, farmers alleged they had been set up for losses.

Before the planting season is over, the government intends to give 6 million bags of fertiliser at a reduced price to the North Rift, South Rift, and Lake Basin regions.

“The target is to ensure the supply is made on time between now and the planting time which is in the next month,” he said.

“Now people are saying they are smelling rain so now we are going to reap big. We are working with the county governors and elected leaders in this initiative.”
