After rival stores claimed that a recently established Chinese-owned supermarket in the capital of Kenya was forcing them out of business with its low prices, the supermarket temporarily closed its doors.
The China Square said on Sunday that it would temporarily cease operations “to allow us to re-evaluate and replan our firm strategy.” China Square is located at Unicity Mall, 18 kilometers (11 miles) northeast of the Kenyan capital.
China Square owner Lei Cheng cited that the company would also be “considering the possibility of cooperating with local traders to enhance our offerings and better integrate with the community”.
Other problems that required the extended shutdown, according to the outlet’s announcement on Sunday, included a lack of cash registers and inaccurate information about its business practices.
“Some of the statements on the internet have been misleading people, and some customers have overrated our services which has created unrealistic expectations,” the statement read in part.
Owner Lei Cheng, alias Charlie, stated that in order to handle the huge volume of patrons, they will consider hiring more security employees.
In order to ensure that client lines are short upon reopening, he stated that they were attempting to find a solution to the problem with the tills.
We must stop operations and provide a cooling-off time, he said.
Charlie cautioned the public against understanding the closure in any other way than what was explicitly intended.
