How adverse weather is forcing supermarkets to impose limits on fresh fruit and vegetables worldwide

In supermarkets, customers are subject to limits on fruits and vegetables due to low supplies. Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, lettuce, salad bags, broccoli, cauliflower, and raspberries are now limited to three per customer, Asda revealed today. Consequently, it’s believed that other large supermarket chains are thinking about taking similar short-term steps.

Retailers blames the combination of adverse weather, transportation issues, and low yields in Europe and Africa. Customers have been urged not to panic buy since it is anticipated that supplies will increase over the coming weeks.

Individuals from all over the nation have been venting on social media about how specific products aren’t available in stores.

An Asda spokesman said: ‘Like other supermarkets, we are experiencing sourcing challenges on some products that are grown in southern Spain and north Africa.

“We have introduced a temporary limit of three of each product on a very small number of fruit and vegetable lines. So, customers can pick up the products they are looking for.’

Additionally, difficult weather conditions in most parts of Africa are to be blamed.

Worse times ahead

However, the disruption is expected to last longer.

‘While disruption is expected to last a few weeks, supermarkets are adept at managing supply chain issues and are working with farmers to ensure that customers are able to access a wide range of fresh produce’, Andrew Opie, director of food and sustainability, said

During the past three to four weeks, growers and suppliers in Morocco have had to deal with: Severe temperatures, intense rain, flooding, and canceled ferries, all of which have had an impact on the amount of fruit reaching Britain.

Morocco experienced production issues in January due to extremely chilly nighttime temperatures that hampered tomato ripening. Ferry cancellations because of inclement weather, which affected lorry deliveries, added to these problems. Weather has also had a significant impact on Spain, Britain’s second important winter supply.
