Kibera hotel owner charges youtuber Kshs 800 for Ugali

A Kibera hotel owner sparked a lively debate among Kenyans when footage emerged of him charging French YouTuber Kino Yves Ksh800 for a plate of Ugali.

In the video, uploaded on Yves’ channel on December 3, the Vlogger was exploring Kibera, showcasing his tour of Kenya. During his lunch break, Yves purchased fish and kachumbari from a nearby vendor and decided to visit a local hotel. He requested Ugali, a favorite local dish, and also ordered matumbo, which was being prepared in the kibandaski.

When Yves finished his meal and asked for the bill, he was informed that he owed Ksh1,000, with Ksh200 for the matumbo and a whopping Ksh800 for the Ugali.

“I’ll give you Ksh500 because I think you are overpriced. The ugali is not Ksh800,” argued the YouTuber.

“Just top with Ksh200,” insisted the hotel owner, and Yves reluctantly complied.

The video prompted displeasure from some Kenyans, with concerns that such practices could discourage potential tourists. Others questioned why the food vendor overcharged for the ugali, especially when Yves had shared his meal with some of the staff.

Some Kenyans suggested that Yves could have positively promoted the open-air restaurant if he had been treated better.

“It’s unfortunate that the ugali guy decided to be shortsighted and overcharge you. You paid 10 times for a piece of ugali, and they ate a large piece of your fish and kachumbari. He’s a disgrace!” commented one concerned woman.

“Such people should be punished for such acts. It’s very shameful and embarrassing for us Kenyans. Notably, even the lady you had lunch with and the others around did not try to tell this guy that what he was doing was wrong. Shame on him,” added another Twitter user.
